With the junior league team away at the County Finals, 12 inexperienced young players took up the challenge to compete against Burghley Park Juniors in the annual Ryder Cup style DG Challenge Trophy.
The match was played over 2 days, on Saturday the teams played 9 holes of foursomes, with handicap players partnering non-handicap players playing from appropriate tees. On the Sunday, the competition resumed with the juniors playing individual matchplay. With at least half the matches being settled on the last green Belton Woods just fell short and Burghley Park won the trophy.
The competition has become an important fixture in the calendar with juniors striving all season to qualify for the event in a similar system to professional golfers for the Ryder Cup.
As one of the parents commented “This has become a special weekend for the kids, a highlight of the summer with the perfect combination of competitiveness and camaraderie.”
Over the same weekend the Belton Woods Juniors League squad were at Toft Golf Club battling out the Lincolnshire League Final having won the South Lincolnshire League competition earlier in the month. In blustery conditions they just feel short losing 2 games to 1 to the North Lincolnshire League winners Woodhall Spa.
